Improper dental care can lead to tooth decay, bad breath, and gum problems which can lead to pain. All of this means that good oral hygiene is necessary for you to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Now while it is great to have fresh breath and white teeth, did you know that researchers have discovered a direct link between good oral hygiene and good overall health?

What all this boils down to is that in order to live healthy you must make proper mouth care a priority. There are many practices that could help improve the health of your teeth and gums.

The following are some best practices that can keep your teeth and gums healthy now and for years to come.
• Quit smoking as smoking damages your mouth including yellowing your teeth and giving your breath a bad odor.

• Limit and/or all together avoid sugary foods such as cookies and candy.

• Brush your teeth daily using a soft bristle toothbrush to get beneath the gum line.

• Change out your toothbrush every 3 - 4 months or when the ends start to look worn, whichever comes first.

• Use a quality fluoride-based toothpaste.

• Ask your dentist for a deep teeth cleaning to remove any plaque and hardened tartar.

• Avoid sugary drinks and instead stay hydrated by drinking water.
